This is the kind of devastation currently facing some fanciers in Scotland. In almost 12 years of being involved in this campaign to gain protection for our pigeons, I don’t think I have ever seen such sustained carnage. Linda Brooks
The following letter and photos are from D Callander, Kirkcudbright:
With Reference to the research volunteers I have enclosed photos taken over the past months from March till June. Then I gave up taking any further photos. I started the 2008 year with 37 old birds and was left with 9 to race, the rest were either killed or injured and these were put down. I reared 46 young birds, these never trained or raced. I was left with 17, the rest were either killed or injured or put down.

Mr Callander also included photos showing various deterrents that he moves around his house and loft. Clearly none of these is of any help. He also says he has been advised to try flashing lights but has witnessed sparrowhawks attacking small birds in and around tractors as they work the fields WHILE THEIR WARNING LIGHTS ARE FLASHING.
The Callander’s garden did have 10 blackbirds this spring. They have now ALL been killed by the local sparrowhawk.
